Kirby: Planet Robobot[Note 1] is an action platformer video game developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS. It was released in Japan in April 2016, and will be released internationally in June 2016.

Plot

One day, a planet-sized space ship named the Access Ark conquers and mechanizes Kirby's home world, the planet Pop Star. King Dedede and Meta Knight try to fight back, but Castle Dedede and the Halberd are both destroyed by powerful lasers. It is now up to Kirby, who slept through the entire attack, to set things right once again.

Kirby starts by destroying the four alien bases that serve as the invading ship's legs. When doing so, he encounters an alien girl named Susie, who says she is gathering resources for President Haltmann, her boss. Kirby also acquires the Robobot Armor, a mysterious power suit that adapts to and enhances his powers. He also battles Meta Knight (who had been captured and mechanized), and imperfect clones of Dedede.

Kirby eventually encounters President Haltmann inside the Access Ark. Haltmann, who has been following the business plans of a supercomputer named Star Dream, duels Kirby in his personal robot but is defeated. Angered, Haltmann attempts to use the Star Dream to destroy Kirby, but is betrayed by Susie, who intends on selling the machine to other companies. Star Dream becomes self-aware as result of Susie removing the helmet Haltmann used to control it. Star Dream then announces that all organic life-forms are obstacles in the HWC's business plan, assimilates Haltmann, and embarks on a mission of intergalactic destruction. With a restored Meta Knight's help, Kirby fuses his Robobot Armor with the repaired Halberd and defeats Star Dream in outer space.

Star Dream retreats and takes control of the Access Ark, transforming itself into a living computerized planet to continue the fight. As Kirby destroys the armor covering the ship, the Access Ark's true identity is revealed: it's a Nova, one of the wish granting comets used by Marx in Kirby Super Star. With Haltmann's consciousness fading within its operating system, Star Dream goes a rampage but is finally destroyed by Kirby, who ejects from the Halberd to destroy it with a gigantic drill. Kirby's robot sacrifices itself to toss the hero back to Pop Star. The machines sent by Haltmann disappear, returning Dream Land to its natural state.

In a subgame in which the quest is played again as Meta Knight, a different ending occurs. After defeating Haltmann, Star Dream requests Meta Knight prove himself to it and summons clones of Dark Matter (in its Kirby's Dream Land 2 form) and Queen Sectonia for him to do battle with. Once both clones are defeated, Star Dream summons Galacta Knight via a space-time warp. Galacta Knight destroys Star Dream and attacks Meta Knight. Galacta Knight falls in battle once more, allowing Meta Knight to once again reign as the galaxy's greatest warrior.

Gameplay

Kirby: Planet Robobot is a platforming title in which players control Kirby and have the ability to switch between a set of two 2D planes.[1] Kirby's ability of absorbing enemies' abilities make a return as well, and over 25 of them are set to appear, including three new Copy Abilities, known as "Doctor", "Poison", and "ESP".[2] A new feature for this game is the ability for Kirby to equip himself with large robotic bodies, which can make use of whichever Copy Ability he is able to scan to perform a stronger attack based on that power.[3]

The game includes with it a multiplayer mode called "Team Kirby Clash" where up to four players can equip themselves with various Copy Abilities and powers reminiscent of character classes in most RPGs, before cooperating to defeat large bosses. The mode supports Download Play.[4] Players earn experience points and level up when players complete missions.[5] In addition, the game also includes a mode named "Kirby 3D Rumble" where players shoot in 3D space and try to aim for a high score.[2]

Several Amiibo are usable with the game, with each one giving Kirby a specific ability.[6][7]

Development

The game was first unveiled at a Nintendo Direct on March 3, 2016.[8] A set of Kirby themed amiibo (consisting of Kirby, King Dedede, Meta Knight, and Waddle Dee) has been confirmed to coincide with the game's release date, and offer unique gameplay changes.[9] The game was released in Japan on April 28, 2016, and is set to be released worldwide in June 2016.[5]

Robobot was conceived as more of a direct successor to "Kirby: Triple Deluxe" early in development. The game would have featured the Hypernova ability, though it was eventually replaced with the Robobot Armor in order to avoid retreading old ground. [10]
