St. George Indian Orthodox Church, is a parish under the Madras Diocese of the Indian Orthodox Church.

History

A congregation formed in 2009 for the spiritual needs of orthodox malayalees in Perth, Western Australia who left India to secure a future for them and their next generations. First Holy Qurbana of the congregation was celebrated on 28 February 2009 at Queen of Apostles Catholics Church. Celebrants of the Holy Qurbana were M.L. Thomas Corepiscopa (Kollam Orthodox Diocese|Kollam Diocese) and K.Y. Chacko (Vicar, St. Mary's Orthodox Church, Melbourne).[1]

Today

The congregation grown to the strength of more than 50 families now. Holy Qurbana is celebrated on every second and last Saturday at St. Georges Anglican Church, Applecross, Western Australia.

Patron saint

Saint George is one of the most venerated saint in the Oriental Orthodox church. It is believed that the saint (called Geevargheese Sahada in Malayalam) protects believers against serpents, ailments, and any kind of danger in general.

Feast of Saint George is celebrated on 6 May. There are various traditions and rituals associated with feast of Saint George in Indian Orthodox Church.[2] A noon meal is serve to the pilgrims in many parishes. Major pilgrim centres of Saint George in Indian Orthodox Church are St. George Orthodox Church, Kadamattam, St. George Orthodox Church, Puthuppally and St. George Orthodox Church, Chandanapally.
