- May 24 – The Falkirk Wheel, a rotating boat lift, connecting the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal, near Falkirk, Scotland, is opened by Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom as part of her Golden Jubilee.[1]
