The ASEAN University Games (AUG) is a biennial sports event that involves athletes from the universities of the ASEAN member countries. Organised by the members of the ASEAN University Sports Council (AUSC), the first event was held in 1981. The 2014 edition becomes the 17th ASEAN University Games.
This edition of the Games also marked the fourth time Indonesia hosted ASEAN University Games. Indonesia has already hosted the 1982 edition in Jakarta, followed by Bandung (1990) and Surabaya (2004).

Mascots
The mascots of the games are two elephants in traditional Indonesian clothes. They represents the warmth heart of the Palembang People and are described as athletic, smart and talented.[4]
