Abel Ashworth (birth registered April–June 1864[1] — 10 January 1938 (aged 73)[2]) birth registered in Ashton-under-Lyne district, was a rugby union footballer of the 1890s, playing at representative level for England, and at club level for Oldham,[3] as a Forward, e.g. Front row, Lock, or Back row, he died in Oldham. Prior to Tuesday 2 June 1896, Oldham was a rugby union club.

International honours

Abel Ashworth won a cap for England while at Oldham in 1892 against Ireland.[4]

Change of Code

When Oldham converted from the rugby union code to the rugby league code on Tuesday 2 June 1896, Abel Ashworth would have been 31 years of age. Consequently, he may have been both a rugby union and rugby league footballer for Oldham.
