Ben Hampton (born 29 February 1992) is an Australian professional rugby league footballer who currently plays for the Melbourne Storm in the National Rugby League. He plays at five-eighth, halfback and fullback.

Early life

Born in Temora, New South Wales, Hampton went to Temora West Public School until year 6 and played junior rugby league for the Temora Dragons. When his family moved to North Queensland he attended Mareeba State High School and played his junior football for the Mareeba Gladiators.[3] Hampton was signed by National Rugby League club the Melbourne Storm and put into a development program. Hampton played for the Storm in the Toyota Cup and represented Queensland at under-15, under-16 and under-18 level. In 2012 Hampton was promoted to the Melbourne Storm's full-time squad and selected to captain the Maroons in the inaugural U20 State of Origin match.[4]

Playing career

2013

Hampton made an outstanding first grade debut in Round 15 of the 2013 NRL season against the Gold Coast Titans where he scored the Storm's two tries, made an impressive try saving tackle on Ashley Harrison, was heavily involved in the match despite taking a number of heavy hits from larger opponents, and took on a kicking role after usual playmaker Gareth Widdop was stretchered from the field in the Storms 18-12 loss at Cbus Super Stadium.[5] In Round 18 against the Canterbury-Bulldogs Hampton played his second and final match for the Storm in the 39-0 loss at ANZ Stadium.[6] Hampton played 2 NRL matches and scored 2 tries for the Storm in the 2013 NRL season. Hampton mostly played for the Storms feeder teams in the NSW and QLD Cup the Cronulla Sharks and Eastern Suburbs Tigers.

2014

Due to the departure of Gareth Widdop to the St George Illawarra Dragons and Brett Finch retiring, Hampton has cemented the five-eighth position of his own until Round 16 when he was over chosen by the inform Roberts and didn’t play in first again for the rest of the year. On 30 July 2014, Hampton re-signed with the Storm on a 2-year contract keeping him with the club to the end of the 2016 season.[7] Hampton finished the Storms 2014 NRL season with him playing in 11 matches and scoring 2 tries.

2015

On 31 January and 1 February, Hampton played for the Storm in the 2015 NRL Auckland Nines.[8] He finished off the 2015 season having played in 3 matches and scoring 1 try for the Storm,[9] playing most the year for the Sunshine Coast Falcons in the Queensland Cup.

2016

On 1 February, Hampton was named in the Storm's 2016 NRL Auckland Nines squad.[10]
