Robert T. Farnham (born January 21, 1989,) is an American professional ice hockey left winger currently under contract for the New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League (NHL).

Early life

Farnham was born on January 21, 1989 to Bob and Glorianne Farnham. His father played for the Brown Bears football team as well as in the Canadian Football League with the Toronto Argonauts. His mother is a member of the Demoulas family, which owns the Market Basket chain of supermarkets. Two of his uncles also played football at Brown and one of his cousins, Buddy Farnham, briefly played for the New England Patriots.[1][2]

Playing career

High school

Farnham played his first two high school seasons at Brooks School in his hometown of North Andover, Massachusetts. He helped lead Brooks to back to back ISL Division II Championships. During his sophomore season he was named Hockey Night in Boston Sophomore MVP, Eagle-Tribune Player of the Year, ISL Division II MVP, and was named to the Boston Globe All-Scholastic and All-New England Prep Division II teams. He transferred to Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts for his final two seasons. During the 2007–08 season, he served as the team's co-captain and finished with 21 goals and 30 assists. While at Phillips Academy, Farnham was also the starting third baseman for the baseball team, batting .364 as a junior and .433 as a senior and helping the team to back-to-back NE Prep Championships.[1][2]

Brown University

Prior to turning professional, Farnham attended Brown University where he played four seasons (2008–12) of NCAA Division I hockey with the Brown Bears, registering 23 goals, 31 assists, 54 points, and 128 penalty minutes in 129 games. Farnham was named to the ECAC Hockey All-Academic team in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012, and he served as the team's alternate captain during his final season. He earned a degree in Commerce, Organizations and Entrepreneurship.[1][2]

Professional career

In his attempt to pursue professional hockey, Farnham was signed to an AHL tryout deal by the Providence Bruins in March 2012. After being released from AHL tryouts from Providence, the Worcester Sharks and Hamilton Bulldogs, Farnham signed an ECHL contract with the Wheeling Nailers on October 10, 2012.

After only 9 games with Wheeling (ECHL), Farnham's aggressive, agitating style of play and combination of speed and hitting ability had established himself as a player that deserved a call-up. On November 7, 2012 Farnham was loaned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. After 11 games with WB/S, Farnham had effectively brought his uptempo agitating game to the AHL compiling 51 penalty minutes, and was rewarded with a contract extension penciling him in as a full-time AHL player.

Playing 65 regular-season games for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the AHL during the 2012–13 season, Farnham scored 11 points and led all AHL rookies with 274 penalty minutes.[3] Farnham's first professional fight came on November 9, 2012 when he fought Steve Oleksy of the Hershey Bears. Farnham's first AHL point came in the same game when he assisted on a Riley Holzapfel goal. On December 19, 2012, Farnham recorded his first professional goal when he scored on Robin Lehner of the Binghamton Senators.

On July 5, 2013, the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL) signed Farnham to a one-year two-way contract.[4]

Farnham made his NHL debut on December 13, 2014 for the Pittsburgh Penguins in a game against the Columbus Blue Jackets where the Penguins lost to the Blue Jackets in a shootout.[5] Farnham would take place in his first NHL fight in his first NHL game, taking on Jordan Leopold.

After recording 4 fighting majors in his first 5 NHL games, Farnham was sent back down to Wilkes-Barre. On January 20, 2015, Farnham was called back up for a game against the Philadelphia Flyers to provide "intensity" as head coach Mike Johnston was expecting a tough, physical game against their in-state rivals.[6] Farnham fulfilled his role, bringing two hits in just over five minutes of ice time. Farnham also dropped the gloves with Pierre-Edouard Bellemare in a memorable fight, as announcers and other media members called Bellemare out after refusing to take off his helmet before engaging.[7] Farnham was sent down to Wilkes-Barre (AHL) the following day.

Farnham made the Penguins opening night roster to begin the 2015–16 season. He featured in 3 games before he was placed on waivers on October 25, 2015. The following day under the familiarity of former Penguins staff, coach John Hynes and general manager Ray Shero, Farnham was claimed by New Jersey Devils on October 26, 2015,[8] and scored his first NHL goal and first NHL assist in his Devils debut on October 31, 2015 against the New York Islanders.[9]

On January 14, 2016, Farnham was suspended for four games by the NHL’s Department of Player Safety for an illegal hit on St. Louis Blues' forward Dmitrij Jaskin. Farnham was assessed a major for interference and a game misconduct on the play. The hit was seen as being in retaliation for a legal hit delivered to Farnham seconds earlier by Blues' player Kevin Shattenkirk.[10] As a direct result of the hit, four Blues' players chased Farnham while St. Louis forward Ryan Reaves knocked Devils' forward Jordin Tootoo out in a fight.[11]
