Borge is a parish and former municipality on the island of Vestvågøya in Nordland county, Norway. It is located in the northern part of the present-day municipality of Vestvågøy. The main church for the municipality is Borge Church in the village of Bøstad.[1]

History

The parish of Borge was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). In 1927, the southern district of Borge (population: 625) split off to form the new municipality of Valdberg. This left Borge with 4,093 inhabitants. On 1 January 1963, Borge was merged with Buksnes, Hol, and Valberg to create the new municipality of Vestvågøy. Before the merger Borge had a population of 4,056.[2]

Name

The municipality (originally the parish) was named after the old Borge farm (Old Norse: Borgar), since the Borge Church was built there. The name is the plural of borg which means "castle" or "hill/plateau suitable for a castle".[3]
