Its boundaries were created for the “long established name” for the western part in August 2000 which is located within the Regional Council of Goyder and for the eastern part in March 2003 which is located within the Mid Murray Council. The name is reported as being derived from Field Marshal Sir Charles Henry Brownlow.[1]

The Hundred of Brownlow covers an area of 340 square kilometres (131 sq mi), was proclaimed in 1883 by Governor Jervois and was named after Field Marshal Sir Charles Henry Brownlow.[7][1]

The principal land use within the locality is agriculture involving “extensive grazing.”[8][9]
