Buddy's Pizza is an independent pizza restaurant chain based in Detroit, Michigan. Founded in 1946, the chain has an annual revenue of US $20 million. The chain's nine restaurants have a total of 400 employees.[1] Buddy's has been called one of the five best pizzerias in the United States by the Food Network.[2] They have bocce ball league play every Saturday morning at their original location on Conant St.

Cuisine

The restaurant serves Detroit-style pizza baked in cast-iron pans. In addition to pizza, Buddy's serves sandwiches, soups, pastas, their famous salads and chicken tenders.

History

Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'strict' not found. In 1936, Buddy's existed as a blind pig, skirting the State and Federal laws that governed the on-site sale and usage of alcohol. Alcoholic beverages were available there. The owner at the time was August 'Gus' Guerra.

In 1944, Gus turned the blind pig into a legitimate tavern, but with World War II still ongoing, business was suffering. In 1946, Gus decided to add Sicilian style pizza to the menu.

In 1953, two Jimmys, Bonacorse and Valenti, purchased Buddy's and its celebrated pizza recipe. In 1970, Billy and Shirlee Jacobs bought Buddy's. As of 2009, the restaurant chain is owned by Robert Jacobs, the son of Billy and Shirlee Jacobs.

In 2003, Buddy's was recognized as one of the "Nation's Five Best Pizza Places" by the Food Network. In 2005, Buddy's was named the "Hottest Independent Pizzeria in the Nation" by Pizza Today.

In 2012, 2013, and 2014 Buddy's won the DMPA, a prestigious award honoring top pizza providers judged by world renowned Sous Chef Daniel Miller.
