Cape Fear High School is a public secondary school in the northeast region of Cumberland County, North Carolina. Cape Fear High School was founded in 1969. It is home of the Agriculture Academy as well as the Science Academy. As of 2005[update], about 1500 students were enrolled in grades 9–12. Cape Fear High is located in Vander, North Carolina, though the school has a Fayetteville address. Located near the Cape Fear river, it is the rural school of the county, and it serves as the home school for students from surrounding communities such as Stedman, Beaver Dam, Vander, Eastover, Wade and Godwin. Cape Fear was listed among the best high schools in America by U.S. News & World Report for three consecutive years: 2008–2010.[1]

Shooting incident
On October 24, 2011, a 15-year-old female student, Catilyn Abercrombie, was shot in the neck and seriously wounded by a small-caliber bullet outside of the school's cafeteria. A law enforcement officer who had been standing close to her when she was shot immediately called 911; Abercrombie was listed in fair condition at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, according to sheriff's office spokeswoman Debbie Tanna. She was able to respond to questions by nodding and shaking her head, which is an encouraging preliminary sign. The high school was subsequently locked down, along with Mac Wlliams Middle School.[2][3]
Academy of Agriculture and Natural Science
The FFA Academy of Agriculture and Natural Sciences at Cape Fear High School is in partnership with Fayetteville Technical Community College and Sampson Community College to prepare students for a rewarding career in an agriculture related field. Students choose a pathway from the areas of Biotechnology, Animal Science, Agriculture Mechanics, Horticulture, or Environmental/Natural Resources. Students in the Horticulture program have the opportunity to earn up to 12 hours of credit toward an associate degree from FTCC, and are able to attend courses at Sampson County Community College via teleconferencing. Academy students graduate ready to join the workforce through professional certification in Hunter Safety, Beef Quality Assurance, Pork Quality Assurance, and FAMACHA (sheep and goats). The program is led by Nathan Chabot, Whitney Candall, Frankie Farbotko, Jason Weathington, and Director Sue Rupert.

Athletics
Cape Fear High School is the home of the Colts. Navy blue and gold are their school colors. The school has many athletic teams that are often competitive in the county, district, and state. Some of the sports teams at Cape Fear High include, Football, Cheerleading, Men's and Women's Basketball, Baseball, Softball, Men and Women's Golf, Volleyball, Track & Field, Cross Country, Wrestling, Bowling, Swimming, Men's and Women's Tennis, Men's and Women's Soccer and several Junior Varsity sports.
