There are three separate Independent School Leagues in the United States. Each represents private schools in separate geographical regions, and each includes (at least) several prestigious institutions. All three Independent School Leagues refer to their league as "the ISL"; however, there are no athletic or academic relationships between the leagues.

The original league is located in New England in the greater Boston, MA area. Members include many of the United States' most storied, private boarding schools.

The second ISL is located in the greater Chicago, IL area. Several members have historic ties to the Midwest's great, private universities, the University of Chicago and Northwestern University.

The third ISL is located in the greater Washington, D.C., area.
