Changping Line, Beijing Subway

Not to be confused with S2 Line of the Beijing Suburban Railway, which runs from the Beijing North Railway Station to the Badaling Great Wall through Changping District. The S2 Line is operated by the Ministry of Railways.

The Changping Line of the Beijing Subway (Chinese: 北京地铁昌平线; pinyin: běijīng dìtiě chāngpíng xiàn) is a mostly elevated rapid transit line in northern Beijing. The line started construction in 2009. In September 2010, Construction was completed, and was followed by three-month test run. The line opened on December 30, 2010 and currently runs north from the Xi'erqi station on Line 13 to Nanshao. It is 21.24 km in length with 7 stations, only Nanshao is underground. During rush hours, the section between Life Science Park and Xi'erqi Stations is most congested section in the Beijing subway network, operating at 132% capacity.

After a second phase of construction, the Changping Line will be extended further north to the Thirteen Tombs Scenic Area, and will connect central Changping District with Beijing subway network.

Route

The Changping Line runs parallel and to the east of the Badaling Expressway, passing near the townships of Shahe and Nanshao.

Future development

A south extension beyond the current southern terminus of Xi'erqi has been proposed. Originally planned to end at Xizhimen with the entire extension sharing the right of way with Line 13 between Xizhimen and Xi'erqi, on a quadruple track layout. However, due to capacity issues at Xizhimen, the proposal has since been revised and Changping Line will parallel Line 13 and terminate at Jishuitan instead, with transfers to Line 2. The south extension is planned to be completed by 2020

The planned route of the Changping Line was chosen from three alternatives. The other original options placed the southern terminus of the line at the Beijing North Railway Station near Line 2 at Xizhimen and at Huoying, with transfers not only to Line 8 but to Line 13 as well. One original alternative plan set Phase II at 16.7 km with one extra station beyond the Ming Tombs.

On January 5, 2009, the Changping District government signed land clearing contracts with townships along route, Huilongguan, Shahe and Nanshao, marking the official beginning of Phase I construction. Phase I was set to be completed by the end of 2010, and Phase II is scheduled for completion by 2012.

On September 19, 2010, the line commenced trial running with empty cars.

On December 30, 2010, Phase I of the line entered into operation.
