General Sir Edward Lugard GCB, PC, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , (8 May 1810 – 31 October 1898) was a British Army officer who served as Adjutant-General in India (1857–58) and later as Permanent Under-Secretary of State for War (1861–71) at the War Office.
Military career
Lugard fought in the Battle of Kabul in 1842 during the First Anglo-Afghan War.[1] He also took part in the Battle of Mudki in December 1845, the Battle of Aliwal in January 1846 and the Battle of Sobraon in February 1846 during the First Anglo-Sikh War.[1] He became Adjutant General for the Punjab District in 1848, Deputy Adjutant General in Bombay in 1854 and Adjutant-General in India in July 1857.[2] He commanded the 2nd Division at the Siege of Lucknow in 1857 during the Indian Rebellion before retiring in October 1858.[3] He then served as Permanent Under-Secretary of State for War at the War Office from 1861 to 1871.[1]
