Sheikh was murdered by the Punjab police when he was travelling on a train along with his daughter and a Kashmiri Pandit friend on the night of July 13, 2003[1] The Punjab police cremated his body within hours after killing him presumably to destroy evidence.[2]Sheikh's untimely death was shocking and was received with an outpouring of grief in Kashmir, and India.[3]

Music career

Sheikh started his music career at the young age of 14. Sheikh gained widespread popularity in Kashmir and India. He was widely known as the "Mehdi Hassan of Kashmir". He was honored with many national and international awards. For his contributions to the music and art of Kashmir, he received many awards from the Chief Minister Of Kashmir.[4]

Personal life

Legal Battle

In 2007, the Punjab and Chandigarh High Court, which handled Sheikh's murder and cremation case since 2003, asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate Sheikh's assassination. The criminal investigation body of India approached Sheikh's family only once in 2007 and it's yet to unravel the mystery surrounding the singer's assassination.

Legacy

Known for his Sufi music and Ghazals, Sheikh's songs are widely popular in Kashmir. Every year on July 13 he is remembered by his fans and friends. An award has been instituted in his name, which encourages young talent in Kashmir in the field of music and arts.
