Gianluca Basile (born January 24, 1975) is an Italian professional basketball player, currently playing for Orlandina Basket of the DNA Gold. He is 192 cm tall (6 ft 3 ¾ in) [1] and he weighs about 95 kg. He is considered to be one of the best 1990s and 2000s era Italian basketball players. He won the silver medal at the 2004 Summer Olympic Games. He was also the captain of the senior men's Italian national team.

Player profile

Basile excels in the role of shooting guard, or point forward, and is a very effective three-point shooter. He invented and named the "tiro ignorante" ("ignorant shot"), a three-pointer shot in difficult conditions which surprises the opponent.

Professional career

Basile played four years with Pallacanestro Reggiana and seven years with Fortitudo Bologna, with whom he won two Italian League championships as the team captain. In 2005, he moved to Barcelona. In July 2011, he signed a two-year deal with Pallacanestro Cantù.[2]

On July 6, 2012 Emporio Armani Milano officially announced the signing of Gianluca Basile to a one-year contract.[3] His contract with the team expired on June 30, 2013, and he became a free agent.[4]

Pro clubs

Italian national team

Basile was the leader of the senior men's Italian national basketball team that won the silver medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, the best result ever for Italy after 1980. He also helped Italy beat Team USA by a score of 95-78, by scoring 25 points in a friendly game against the US.[5] His medals with the national team also include a gold medal at the EuroBasket 1999, and a bronze medal at the EuroBasket 2003.
