Gigi Di Fiore
Luigi Di Fiore (born January 2, 1960), better known as Gigi Di Fiore, is an Italian historian and journalist, whose work is mainly focused on the history of the Camorra, the history of Southern Italy and the Risorgimento.
Biography
In 1983, Di Fiore received his law degree and became a professional journalist in 1985. For thirteen years he worked as a reporter of judicial reporting in Naples for Il Mattino. Di Fiore has been a special correspondent for the same newspaper since 1994. He also worked at Napolioggi, Napolinotte, the Giornale di Napoli and as editor at the Giornale, under the direction of Indro Montanelli. He collaborated with the weekly magazine Oggi and the monthly magazine Focus Storia. He is one of the bloggers of the online newspaper Il Mattino, where he edits the column Controstorie. In 1995, for the publication of reports of investigations in some of his articles, he tailed and controlled for a month by the Carabinieri at the request of the Public Prosecutor of Naples. The affair was also reported and documented in a chapter on page 42 of the White Paper published in Rome by the National Union of Journalists on October 24, 2008.
In addition to journalism, he devotes himself to historical research, especially on two topics: organized crime and the history of the Italian Risorgimento and the South in general, with attention to the end of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and post-unification banditry.
On September 29, 2020 he published Pandemic 1836: The War of the Bourbons against Cholera, a book particularly interesting not only to analyze the epidemic from "cholera morbus" spread throughout the world in 1800s, but also to better understand the pandemic from Covid-19 of 2019-20.
For these activities he has participated in seminars, conferences, conventions and investigations on organized crime and the Mezzogiorno, the Risorgimento and brigandage.
