The Carna Botnet was a botnet of 420,000 devices created by hackers to measure the extent of the Internet in what the creators called the “Internet Census of 2012”.[11][12]
World map of 24-hour relative average utilization of IPv4 addresses observed using
ICMP ping requests as part of the
Internet Census of 2012 (Carna Botnet), June - October 2012.

Internet penetration in European countries in 2014
as a percentage of a country's population[20]
Future
About 42.4% of the world's population uses the Internet.[21] According to the International Telecommunication Union about 3.2 billion people, or almost half of the world's population, will be online by the end of 2015. Of them, about 2 billion will be from developing countries, including 89 million from least developed countries. In total, about 80% of households in developed countries and 34% in developing countries will have Internet access.[22][23]
