Holy Infant Academy, or HIA, is the only parochial school in Calapan City and the first of fifteen established in Oriental Mindoro. It was founded in 1937 by the SSpS Sisters and is located in Ilaya, Calapan City in Oriental Mindoro. It offers education in preparatory, elementary grades 1-6, and high school. The school is headed by its principal, Mrs. Alona V. Cueto, with the school director as of June 2013, Rev. Fr. Vicente R. Uy, JCD.

History

On July 2, 1936, Oriental Mindoro became an Apostolic Prefecture, with Bishop William Finnemann as its first Prefect. He requested the SSps Sisters to open a Catholic school under the parish to support the missionary work of the Divine Word Missionaries. On March 26, 1937, the congregation sent Sisters to Calapan. The new school was named Holy Infant Academy, in honor of the Child Jesus, locally known as Sto. Niño.

HIA started classes in the Kindergarten and Primary Grades. From this humble beginning came the first Elementary graduates of March 26, 1941. Three months later, the High School Department was opened with the first of 30 boys and 41 girls.

The outbreak of World War II caused the sisters to return to Manila. After the Liberation on June 25, 1945, HIA reopened its doors to 152 High School students and to many elementary pupils.

With its first High School graduation of 5 girls in 1946, HIA began its steady upward climb. With very limited resources during that time, HIA still managed to improve itself and produced successful personalities. It is because the initiative and perseverance of Sister Merita, SSpS.

On August 12, 1977, 8:45 pm, the wooden building burned down with the Provincial Capitol. Fortunately, Sister Aurice, SSpS initiated the construction of the present Main Building.

On 1988, the old 2-storey wooden building was replaced with the new 3-storey concrete building. This building is now the Annex Building with 7 classrooms and 2 Genyo Laboratories.

On 1990, HIA reopened its doors to High School boys after 25 years. Then, the Sisters decided to leave and entrusted HIA to the Apostolic Vicariate of Calapan and its management to the Team of Schools Administrators (TSA) with Ms. Alona Valdez as the school principal.

On 2013, HIA had lost a very important figure when former School Director, Rev. Fr. Nestor J. Adalia, had to leave the school to attend to his responsibilities as Rector for the Saint Augustine Seminary. HIA is now under the supervision of Fr. Vicente R. Uy, JCD and is currently experiencing drastic failures due to the failure of the administration of the new School Director.
