History
Co-founders Shane Lake and Tony Charles founded hungryhouse in 2003, launching the online platform in 2006.The co-founders appeared on BBC1’s investment show Dragons' Den [3] in 2007, with an offer of £100,000 investment coming from James Caan and Duncan Bannatyne.
The investment deal with the Dragons later collapsed, with a £150,000 investment coming from alternative business angels.[4] The initial round of funding was used to expand the business, increasing hungryhouse’s restaurant partners from 150 in 2007 to 2,500 in September 2010.[5]
In February 2013, it was announced that hungryhouse was to merge with the Berlin-based, global online food ordering network, Delivery Hero, which operates in a total of 16 markets worldwide and has a total of 60,000 restaurant partners.[6][7]
How it works
The hungryhouse platform is available online, including via the free iPhone or Android apps.[8]
Customers enter their postcode to locate restaurants that deliver to their address, and can browse menus and read customer reviews to identify the best local restaurants. To place an order on the platform, menu items can be placed in the order basket and online payment can be made via credit/debit card.
Customers pay no additional fee for ordering a takeaway through hungryhouse and restaurants pay a commission on every order.[9]
Brand
hungryhouse began TV advertising in early 2012, and subsequent ads with similar creative ran until 2013.[10]
Following a complete overhaul of its brand identity and technology in December 2013,[11][12] hungryhouse launched a new TV advertising campaign centered around the new brand slogan ‘Your hunger. Our mission.’ New TV ads included ‘Space’[13] and ‘Prison’.[14]
The hungryhouse logo is a red shooting star, designed to symbolise the platform’s mission to deliver food hot and on time.[11] The tagline now is The laws of takeaway.
