Hyacinthe de Chalvet OP (14 September 1605 – 1683) was a French Roman Catholic priest and theologian.

Biography

He was born at Toulouse in 1605, the son of François de Chalvet, president of the parliament of Languedoc, and grandson of Mathieu de Chalvet, an eminent magistrate, and the translator of Seneca's works into French. Hyacinthe entered young the Dominican order, and became a celebrated preacher, which function he exercised in various parts of France.

In 1647, he accompanied Achille de Lorraine, Count of Romorantin (1615–1648),[1] in charge of leading Venetian troops to the rescue of Candia, besieged by the Turks. He took the opportunity of paying a visit to the Holy Land; and on his return was made prisoner by the Ottomans, and passed two years in captivity.

After his release he engaged in the printing of his magnum opus Theologus Ecclesiastes, a vast work dedicated to Giovanni Battista de Marinis, Master of the Order of Preachers. Personal friend of Pierre Daniel Huet, Bishop of Avranches,[2] he was very zealous for the doctrine of St. Thomas Aquinas, of which he was a deep student.

After a long residence at Caen, where he was professor of Theology,[3] Chalvet returned to Toulouse, where he died in 1683.[4]
