Lees-Galloway joined the Labour Party in 2005 and became chairman of the Palmerston North branch in the following year.[2] He was selected as successor to retiring MP Steve Maharey, who became Vice Chancellor of Massey University, in a contested Labour Party selection for the 2008 election.[2] He defeated the National Party candidate, Malcolm Plimmer, with a majority of 1,117 votes. Lees-Galloway was Labour's spokesperson on land information and defence, and associate spokesperson on transport and health. Prior to that, he was associate spokesperson on health (drugs and alcohol) and defence.[1]
In September 2010, his Smoke-free Environments (Removing Tobacco Displays) Amendment Bill was drawn from the member's ballot.[3][4] As of October 2011[update], the bill is still awaiting its first reading.[5]
Lees-Galloway was confirmed in the 2011 election with a majority increased from 1,117 in 2008 to 3,285 in the latest election.[6][7] Currently he is the Labour Party's junior whip, spokesperson for ACC and associate health spokesperson.
In the 2014 election, Lees-Galloway was challenged by the Mayor of Palmerston North, Jono Naylor, but remained successful.[8] Lees-Galloway had a majority of 2,212 votes over Naylor.[9]
Private life
Lees-Galloway is married with children.[1]
