History

The station opened in 1870 as a stop on the Tarvisio-Ljubljana Railway. In 1906, it became a junction when two main lines of the New Alpine Railways were completed: the Bohinj Railway to Trieste and the Karawanks tunnel and line to Villach.

The station building was built between 1953 and 1955 upon the plans by sl (Stanislav Rohrman) to replace a prewar structure destroyed by Allied air raids in early 1945. Architecturally, the new building is unusually distinctive for a train station in the area, being a stark modernist box faced in white marble and featuring hexagonal windows.
