Julio Martínez Mesanza
Julio Martínez Mesanza (born September 14, 1955) is a Spanish poet and translator of Italian literature.
Biography
Julio Martínez Mesanza was born in Madrid. He studied Philosophy, but graduated in Italian Philology at the Complutense University of Madrid. A representative of the generation that Luis Antonio de Villena called Postnovísimos and José Luis García Martín ‘of the eighties’. He has also translated classical and modern Italian poetry, from Dante Alighieri to Ugo Foscolo. His best known work is Europe, (1983–1990), a kind of culturalist ethical epic. In 1998 he added another title to this cycle, Fragments of Europe (1977–1997).
He worked at the Ministry of Culture and at the National Library of Spain with Luis Alberto de Cuenca. He has been director of the Instituto Cervantes centres in Lisbon, Milan, Tunis, Tel Aviv and Stockholm. He was in charge of the academic direction at the headquarters of this body in Madrid. In 2017 he won the National Poetry Award for his work Glory, which compiles his poetic activity between 2005 and 2016. Included in the anthology The Eighties Generation (1988), by José Luis García Martín, his poetry has been related to Saint-John Perse, Paul Claudel, Jorge Luis Borges, Culturalism and the latter's medievalist interest.
