Lay assessors are used by the government of the United Kingdom to evaluate the quality of service provided by government agencies to the public and citizens of the United Kingdom.[citation needed]

Lay assessor is also used alternatively with "lay judges" as the English term for laymen participating in judging in courts within the judicial system of Sweden (Swedish: nämndeman) and in Japan (裁判員, read "saiban-in").[citation needed]

In Fiji, serious criminal trials are conducted by a judge sitting with four lay assessors.[1]
