Lesley Melissa Nicol (born 19 June 1953 in Plymouth, Devon)[1] is an English actress who is best known for her starring role as Beryl Patmore in the ITV drama series Downton Abbey, and for her roles as Mrs. Beaver in the 1988 BBC adaptation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and as the Queen Giant in The Silver Chair (1990).
Nicol grew up near Manchester, the daughter of an amateur-actress mother and a GP father, and attended Guildhall School of Music & Drama.[1]
She has guest-starred on numerous British television series. She made her film debut in 1999's East Is East, reprising her role from the stage production. She also appeared as Rosie in the West End production of Mamma Mia! from 2000-02. She trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She made a guest appearance on the penultimate episode of the final series of the American sitcom Raising Hope.[citation needed]
Nicol's American-born niece, Brittania, had a short-lived career as an actress herself, starring in the film, The Wicker Tree.[2]
