A Twenty20 International (T20I) is a form of cricket match which is played over 20 overs per side between two national cricket teams. The game is played under the rules of Twenty20 cricket. The first T20I was played between Australia and New Zealand on 17 February 2005.[1] The Indian cricket team played its first T20I match—under the captaincy of Virender Sehwag—on 1 December 2006, against South Africa at the Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg.[2][3][4] In the only T20I match of the series, India won by six wickets.[4] As of October 2015, India is the eighth-most successful T20I team, having played 57 T20I matches with 31 wins,[5] and a tie against Pakistan.[6] In 2007, India won the world championship at the inaugural edition of the ICC World Twenty20, defeating Pakistan by five runs.[7]

As of October 2015, Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the captain and has made the most appearances for India in T20Is.[8] Virat Kohli is the leading run scorer with 1016 runs from 28 innings at an average of 44.17.[8] As of October 2015, Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma are the only players to score a century in a T20I for India.[8] With 29 wickets, Ravichandran Ashwin is the team's leading wicket-taker,[9] while his 4/11 remain the best bowling figures for an India bowler in the format.[10] Yuvraj Singh became the first player to hit six sixes in an over in a T20I;[11] performing the feat against England on 19 September 2007 during the inaugural ICC World Twenty20.[12] In the event he also scored a fifty which came off 12 balls, thus achieving the fastest fifty in international cricket.[11][13] India's highest total, 218, came in the same match, which they won by 18 runs.[14] As of June 2015, the score is the sixth highest total in an innings by a team in a T20I.[15] The team's lowest total, 74, came against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2008.[14]
