This is a list of modern mass production highway-capable plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs), and also includes those plug-ins at an advanced stage of development or being tested in demonstration programs. A PEV is any motor vehicle that can be recharged from any external source of electricity, and a subcategory of electric vehicles that includes all-electric or battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid vehicles, (PHEVs), and plug-in conversions of hybrid electric vehicles depending on battery size and their all-electric range.[1][2] Conventional hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are not included.

Launched in 2001, it was followed in January 2009 by the REVA L-ion. The car was available in 26 countries including India, the UK, Norway, France, Germany, Spain, Australia, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the Philippines.[53][54] Production ended in 2012 and was replaced in 2013 by the Mahindra e2o.[55]

About 4,600 vehicles were sold worldwide by late 2013, with India as its main market with 55% of global sales.[56] Sales in the UK, one of its main markets, ended by late 2011.[57]

60 mi (97 km)[58] The F3DM is the world's first mass-produced plug-in hybrid automobile.[59][60] The F3DM was launched in December 2008 for the Chinese market for fleet customers and in March 2010 to the general public in Shenzhen.[61][62] Sales in Spain began in August 2011.[63] Sales in the U.S. were scheduled for 2012 but never took place.[58][64]

Since 2008 a total of 3,284 F3DMs were sold in China through October 2013.[65][66][67][68] Due to low sales, the F3DM will be replaced by the BYD Qin plug-in hybrid.[69] As of May 2013, the F3DM was no longer in production, but the remaining stock was still on sale as of October 2013.[70]

Production stopped in December 2013 due to financial problems.[100] The Tribunal de Commerce de Niort placed the company in judicial liquidation on March 2014.[101]

Deliveries to retail customers in the U.S. began in July 2012 with availability limited to California and Oregon.[102] Sales were scheduled to begin in selected markets in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maryland, New York, and New Jersey by late February 2013.[104]

A total of 1,070 units were leased in the U.S. through April 2015.[93][105][106][107] In July 2014 Honda announced the end of production of the Fit EV for the 2015 model, together with the Honda Insight hybrid and the Honda FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel-cell car.[108] In March 2015 Honda offered a two-year lease extension to existing lessees, and also to new customers on used cars, at a reduced priced. In both cases there is no purchase option at the end of the lease.[109]

The Fit EV was released through leasing to local government and corporate customers in Japan in August 2012. Availability in Japan was limited to 200 units during its first two years.[110]

The production run ended in September 2014.[119] A total of 2,489 units were sold in the U.S. through April 2015.[93][106][107]

The country with the most orders was the United States with 297 units.[123] Production ended in June 2015.[124] The United States is the leading market with 231 units delivered through June 2015.[125] A total of 19 units had been delivered in Canada by the end of June 2015.[125] As of October 2014, a total of 9 units were registered in Switzerland,[126] 6 in the Netherlands,[127] and 4 in Sweden.[128]

According to JATO Dynamics, only 20 units were registered worldwide during the first nine months of 2014.[135] The United States accounted for 34% of the limited production run, and Europe for 26%.[134] About 127 units sold in the United States through December 2015.[134] As of October 2014, a total of 12 P1s were registered in Switzerland during 2014.[126]

Produced in Norway since 2007 as a successor to the Kewet. Deliveries of an enhanced model began in January 2010.[137]

As of September 2013, a total of 1,087 units were registered in Norway, the leading market, consisting of 2 Kewet CITI VANs, 22 Kewet EL-JET (1-4)s, 50 Kewet CITI JET 5s, 379 Buddy M9 (2010-2013), and 634 Kewet Buddy Citi-Jet 6 (2005-2009).[11] Since its inception in 1991, combined sales of the Kewet and Buddy totaled about 1,500 units through October 2013.[138] As of March 2016, the Buddy was still on sale.[139]

Retail deliveries began in the U.S. and Japan, and fleet customers in Portugal in December 2010.[175][176][177] As of February 2013, the Leaf is also available in Australia, Canada, 17 European countries and other international markets.[178]

Beginning in June 2013 the 2013 model built in the UK has a battery leasing option that varies from GB£70 (US$108) to GB£129 (US$198) per month depending on the miles driven per year and length of the lease. This option reduces the purchase price by GB£5,000 (US$7,680) compared with buying the car with the battery included.[179] A similar option will be available in most European countries.[180]

As of December 2015, the Nissan Leaf the world's best-selling highway-capable electric car in history. Global Leaf cumulative sales passed the 200,000 unit milestone by early December 2015, five years after its introduction.[181][182]

As of January 2016, the United States is the top selling market with 90,346 units,[183][184] followed by Japan with 60,202,[185] Europe with over 49,100 through December 2015,[186][187] and Canada 3,270 units up until January 2016.[188] As of December 2015, the European market leader is Norway with 15,245 new Leafs registered[152][189][190][191][192] (over 20,000 units registered if used imports are included),[193] and the UK with 12,433 units sold.[194][195][196][197]

Volt deliveries in the U.S. began in December 2010[204] and in September 2011 in Canada.[205] European customer deliveries of the Opel Ampera began in February 2012.[206]

Global Volt/Ampera family cumulative sales passed the 100,000 unit milestone in October 2015.[207] As of January 2016, sales are led by the Chevrolet Volt, with the United States as the main market with 89,746 units sold,[183][184] followed by Canada with 5,509 units,[208] and the Netherlands with 1,065 units registered until December 2014.[209] As of December 2015, almost 10,000 Opel/Vauxhall Amperas had been sold in Europe.[210] As of September 2015, the Netherlands ranked as the leading market with 4,976 Amperas registered, followed by Germany with 1,539 Amperas, and the UK with 1,250 units registered by the end of June 2015.[207]

In July 2014, Opel announced that due to the slowdown in sales, the Ampera will be discontinued after the launch of second generation Volt.[211] Production of the first generation 2015 model year Volt ended in mid-May 2015,[212] while manufacturing of pre-production units of the second generation began in March 2015.[213] Retail sales of the second generation Volt are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2015 as a 2016 model year.[214] In April 2015, General Motors confirmed that it will not build the second generation Volt in right-hand-drive configuration. Due to low sales in Australia the Holden Volt will be discontinued once the remaining stock is sold out.[215]

Retail deliveries of the second generation Volt began in the U.S. and Canada in October 2015 as a 2016 model year.[216][217] Availability in the American market is limited to California and the other 10 states that follow California’s zero emission vehicle regulations. The second generation Volt is scheduled to go on sale as a 2017 model year in the 39 remaining states by the second quarter of 2016.[216]

Field testing began in London with 100 units in 2007. The second generation was introduced in 2009 and leasing in the U.S. began in January 2011, limited to 250 units.[219][221][222] Deliveries of the third generation model began in the U.S. in May 2013,[223] and are scheduled to begin in Europe during the second quarter of 2013, and will be available in more than 30 markets worldwide.[220][224]

More than 8,800 units have been sold in North America and Europe through June 2014. This figure includes over 2,300 units of the second generation models leased in 18 markets around the world between 2009 and October 2012.[225] Of these, 1,721 units were registered in Europe through October 2012,[50] and 527 units in the U.S. through December 2012.[93][226] During 2013 a total of 4,130 units of the third generation were sold worldwide.[227] Over 6,500 units of the third generation have been sold through June 2014.[227][228] As of June 2014, combined sales of both generations reached 3,959 units in Germany,[229][230][231][232][233] 2,542 units in the U.S.[81][93][234] and 865 units in France.[154]
