Ubisoft Massive is a Swedish video game studio based in Malmö, Sweden. The company is fully owned by Ubisoft since 2008.[1]
The studio is known for the Ground Control series of real-time tactics video games, World in Conflict, and Far Cry 3.
History
Massive Entertainment was founded in 1997; they were acquired by Vivendi Universal Games in 2002.[2]
In October 2007, they released the game World in Conflict, which has been described in interviews on the company's official website as a further development of the real-time tactics gameplay formula from the Ground Control games, but set on Earth during the late Cold War. It has also been described as being the largest project for Massive Entertainment so far, with a huge budget.[citation needed] The game was released on 18 September 2007 and won wide critical acclaim, including several nominations for one of the best games of 2007.[citation needed] It was followed by an expansion, World in Conflict: Soviet Assault in March 2009.
On 6 August 2008, Activision Blizzard put up Massive Entertainment for sale after the merger of Activision and Vivendi Games and the subsequent internal reorganization.[3] On 10 November 2008, Ubisoft acquired Massive Entertainment.[4]
In March 2009, former CEO Martin Walfisz left Ubisoft Massive.[5]
On 2 November 2010, Massive published an article on their Facebook page detailing a visit to the Swedish Armed Forces Nordic Battle Group.[6] During this visit, several Massive developers partook in the observation of a modern military exercise. The purpose of the observation was to record audio of the entire mock battle, so developers could get a better sense of what a battlefield sounds like.
In December 2010, Ubisoft confirmed that Massive would be "teaming up on a project for Assassin's Creed".[7] On 5 May 2011, it was announced that Massive Entertainment is collaborating on development of Assassin's Creed: Revelations.,[8] which was released in November 2011. Massive also collaborated on the development of Far Cry 3, which was released in December 2012.
At E3 2013 Massive announced and demonstrated their next game, Tom Clancy's The Division.[9]
