Moothakunnam is a small village in the Paravur Taluk, Ernakulam district of Kerala, South India. Moothakunnam centre is a Temple field. Moothakunnam is also an edu city.
Location
Moothakunnam is a small village lying between Kottapuram (Thrissur district) and Madaplathuruth. It is 25 kilometers from Edapally (Kochi City), and eight km from Cherai Beach, a tourist spot. It is the gateway to the coastal areas of Thrissur District. NH 17 passes through this village. The total width of this place is about 250 metres.
Significance
The village Moothakunnam is well known for Shankara Narayana Murthi Moothakunathappan temple, which was blessed by Sree Narayana Guru in the early part of the twentieth century. The temple is located near Periyar river. Speciality about the temple is, whatever trees are considered to be sacred according to Hindutva have sprouted out naturally which shows the sacredness of the temple.
The temple's governing authority runs many educational institutions. Moothakunnam is known for its educational institutions, which attract students from Ernakulam and Thrissur. Hindu Matha Dharma Paripalana (HMDP) Sabha operates an engineering college (SNM IMT), an arts and sciences college (SNM College, Maliankara), an education college (SNM B. Ed College), a teacher training center (SNM TTC, Moothakunnam), an industrial training center (SNM ITI, Moothakunnam), and a higher secondary school (SNM H.S, Moothakunnam), all within three kilometers of the village. Here people from all communities live peacefully. In 20th-century Moothakunnam most of the villages are engaged in toddy tapping, coir manufacturing etc.
Maliankara is three kilometers from the village. There is a Christian chapel said to have been sanctified by a disciple of Jesus (St. Thomas the Apostle). The orthodox Christians name Malankara is derived from the name of this place.
The first mosque built in India (Cheraman Juma Masjid, Kodungallur) is also three kilometers from here.
Lifestyle
Moothakunnam is a thickly populated area. It has one hundred percent literacy. The people tend to be religious and conservative. Most are Hindus (Ezhava) and a few are Hindu (Devara), or Christian.
Economy
The main businesses are the trade shops and stationery. At least ninety-five percent of the population is above the poverty line. A few inhabitants are government employees. Most of the village's population is employed in the construction industry.
