Pyotr Ivanovich Sumin (Russian: Пётр Иванович Сумин; June 21, 1946, Verkhnyaya Sanarka – January 6, 2011[1]) was the governor of Chelyabinsk Oblast of Russia. He was sequentially a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Communist Party of the Russian Federation and Political Party United Russia. He became governor of Chelyabinsk Oblast in 1997. He complained about nuclear waste in his region.[2] Sumin was elected governor in 1996, taking office on January 5, 1997, and reelected in 2000.
In April 2005, following changes in the law, he was nominated for a third term by Russian President Vladimir Putin and unanimously confirmed by the Oblast assembly.
