The RAM 02 was a Formula One car for the 1984 Formula One season, The chassis was designed by Dave Kelly.

Development

RAM Racing attracted sponsorship from Skoal Bandit. Two RAM 02 cars, with Hart turbocharged engines, were entered for Englishman Jonathan Palmer and Frenchman Philippe Alliot. Kelly's new design was disappointing, and the cars were frequent back-markers.

Racing History

The RAM 02 made its debut at the 1984 Brazilian Grand Prix, Only one chassis was available for Alliot but he retired with battery failure.[3] Engine failure put the Frenchman out in South Africa.[4] The Belgian Grand Prix saw a second RAM 02 available for Palmer who finished tenth but Alliot failed to qualify.[5] At San Marino the Frenchman retired because a turbocharger broke and the Englishman finished ninth.[6] At France Alliot retired because of an electrical fault and Palmer finished 13th.[7] Both drivers failed to qualify for Monaco[8] and there was a driver change before the Canadian Grand Prix, with Mike Thackwell replacing Palmer because the Englishman was racing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The race saw the Frenchman finish tenth and the New Zealander retire because a turbocharger broke.[9] Palmer returned in Detroit but retired with a tyre problem and Alliot also retired with brake failure,[10] The Frenchman didn't start the Dallas Grand Prix because of an accident and the Englishman retired because of an electrical fault.[11] Both drivers crashed at Britain. Alliot, Eddie Cheever (Alfa Romeo) and Jo Gartner (Osella) were all out in a first lap crash after Riccardo Patrese's Alfa Romeo went out of control going into Graham Hill Bend. The race was also stopped after eleven laps in order to clear Palmer's car after he had an accident.[12] Both drivers retired at the German Grand Prix, The Frenchman with overheating and the Englishman with a broken turbocharger.[13] At Austria Palmer finished ninth and Alliot finished 11th.[14] The Dutch Grand Prix saw the Englishman finish ninth and the Frenchman tenth.[15] Both drivers retired at Italy, Alliot with an electrical fault and Palmer with oil pressure failure.[16] A broken turbocharger put both drivers out of the European Grand Prix.[17] Both drivers retired at Portugal, the Frenchman with an engine failure and the Englishman with a broken gearbox.[18]

The RAM team had scored no World Championship points during the year with either the RAM 01 or the RAM 02.
