ReLIFE (リライフ Riraifu?) is an ongoing Japanese fantasy drama seinen web manga series written and illustrated by Yayoiso.[1] It's published by NHN PlayArt on comico[2] website since October 12, 2013[3] and has five volumes compiling the chapters published by Earth Star Entertainment[4] released so far. A television anime adaptation was announced on February 13, 2015 and is scheduled to air in July 2016.[5][6][7]

  • Arata Kaizaki[2] (海崎 新太 Kaizaki Arata?)
Voiced by: Kenshō Ono[8]
He is a 27-year-old man with a painful past. He graduated college and started working at a company where a female senpai was being bullied by her male co-workers. He tried to help her but that only increased the bullying leading to the woman rejecting his help and, eventually, her suicide. This tragedy left him traumatized. After several failed job opportunities in similar companies he was working part-time at a convenience store where he was scouted by Onoya An who chose him for the ReLife Project, a scientific experiment to rejuvenate him 10 years and send him back to high school as a student. Apparently, the experiment is supposed to provide a chance to experience youth once again and, in the process, fix whatever's wrong with the subject's life. The surname comes from Kaizaki Station.
  • Ryō Yoake[2] (夜明 了 Yoake Ryō?)
Voiced by: Ryohei Kimura[7]
He is Kaizaki's senior supervisor, a man of about Kaizaki's age who is always seemingly cheerful (which fact irritates Kaizaki to no end). He watches over Kaizaki and his circle of friends from a distance and records everything for the ReLife project. The surname comes from Yoake Station.
  • An Onoya[2] (小野屋 杏 Onoya An?) (Onoya An)
Voiced by: Reina Ueda[7]
She is Kaizaki's junior supervisor and the one who scouted him for the experiment. She is also undercover as a student to watch over Project #002 or Kaizaki. She is very much like Ryō and is always cheerful and acts indifferent to Kaizaki's annoyance about the fact that both of them stalk him all the time. The surname comes from Onoya Station.
  • Chizuru Hishiro[2] (日代 千鶴 Hishiro Chizuru?)
Voiced by: Ai Kayano[8]
She is a very smart female high school student. She usually has the top grades in her class which gives her the right to become the class representative and have all her school expenses paid for. She's also extremely socially awkward and fairly ignorant in anything not directly related to school matters, particularly social and emotional ones so she's always doing online research on whatever she doesn't understand about these. It is revealed that she is Project #001,Yoake's first project before Kaizaki. The surname comes from Hishiro Station.

Aoba High School

She is a student at Kaizaki's high school, and in the same class. She considers Chizuru her rival in academics and Honoka Tamarai (both of them friends with her), to be her rival in volleyball. She is stubborn and proud, but actually genuinely confused inside. She is very competitive, losing her calm over an injury during volleyball because she cannot play in the tournament and being let down by Chizuru's position at the top of the class and as Class Representative. She has a crush on Kazuomi Ōga. The surname comes from Kariu Station.
  • Kazuomi Ōga (大神 和臣 Ōga Kazuomi?)
Voiced by: Yūma Uchida[7]
He is a classmate of Arata's who is also the class representative along with Hishiro. He is naïve, but excels academically. He wears his uniform in a particularly eye-catching way, earning him the nickname "Flashy Ōga" (チャラオーガ Chara-Ōga?) or just "Flashy Blond Guy". He has known Kariu for a long time, and is familiar with her stubbornness and competitiveness. The surname comes from Ōga Station.
  • Honoka Tamarai (玉来 ほのか Tamarai Honoka?)
Voiced by: Himika Akaneya[9]
She is friends with Kariu and the captain of the volleyball team at their school. She is naïve and sweet, and very friendly. She has noticeably large breasts which are a bit of a running gag. Her hair is cut short with a fringe and she is the athletic champion of their school, excelling not only at volleyball but also at running and various other sports as demonstrated early on in the series. The surname comes from Tamarai Station.
  • Nobunaga Asaji (朝地 信長 Asaji Nobunaga?)
Voiced by: Daisuke Namikawa[9]
He is Honoka's childhood friend. He is Akira's childhood friend, too. The surname comes from Asaji Station.
  • Akira Inukai (犬飼 暁 Inukai Akira?)
Voiced by: Noriaki Sugiyama[9]
He is Honoka's childhood friend. He is Nobunaga's childhood friend, too. The surname comes from Inukai Station.

Others

  • Michiru Saiki (佐伯 みちる Saiki Michiru?) was a staff of the company that Arata belonged. Later committed suicide after being persecuted by fellow employees. Her suicide had a great impact for Arata, rendering him unable to return to society. The surname comes from Saiki Station.

The manga began publication on the Comico app in 2013 with physical publication of the series following in 2014. The series was added to the streaming service Crunchyroll manga service on December 21, 2015.[10]

Anime

It was announced on February 13, 2015 that the web manga series will be getting a television anime adaptation that is scheduled to air in July 2016.[5][7] The anime's main cast, broadcast information and first key visual was unveiled at the AnimeJapan 2016 convention in Japan on March 26, 2016.[6] TMS Entertainment is producing the series,[15] with Tomo Kosaka directing, Kazuho Hyodo and Michiko Yokote handling series composition, and Junko Yamanaka designing the characters.[16] On March 30, 2016, it was announced that Penguin Research would be performing the opening song for the anime, while various artists would perform a different ending theme for each episode.[17]

Stage Play

A stage play adaptation will be performed in Tokyo and Osaka in late 2016.[14]

Reception

Volume 1 reached the 30th place on the weekly Oricon manga charts and, as of August 17, 2014, had sold 33,637 copies;[4] volume 2 reached the 9th place and, as of November 16, 2014, had sold 46,040 copies;[18] volume 3 reached the 23rd place and, as of April 5, 2015, had sold 73,019 copies.[19]

It was placed 6th in Zenkoku Shotenin ga Eranda Osusume Comic 2015.[20] It was also nominated for Best General Manga at the 39th Kodansha Manga Awards.[2]

The series had sold 1 million copies as of February 8, 2016. [21]
