History

It is the location of the Roman city Auzia, in the province Mauretania Caesariensis.[2] The name Auzia is still used as a Roman Catholic titular bishopric. During France's colonization of Algeria until the Algerian independence, the city was known as Aumale and it was the seat of the prefecture of Aumale département.
