Spurwink (sometimes referred to "Spurwink Services") is a mental health and special education agency in Portland, Maine serving people diagnosed with autism and other behavioral special needs in the nursery, elementary and secondary educational levels and young adults. Spurwink has about 850 professionals offering 5-hour classes. The agency is accredited by the Council on Accreditation, and is a member of both the Child Welfare League of America and the American Association of Children's Residential Centers.

History

Spurwink was founded in 1960 in Portland, ME and later developed into an essential Maine program. There are three Spurwink schools in the Portland metro area, Bishop Street, Roosevelt and the Cummings, one school each in Brunswick, Casco, Chelsea, Cornville, and Lewston. In 2011 Spurwink opened a new school in Rochester, NH. The Spurwink in Biddeford began in the summer of 1995 starting with five children, and still currently operates in the same building.
