Stephen Dunn (born January 18, 1989) is a Canadian film director, screenwriter and producer.

Early life

Dunn is originally from St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador,[1] and grew up in Nova Scotia. His parents own a modelling agency and he worked as a child actor.[2]

Career

Dunn eventually attended film school and produced several short films as a student, many of which screened at festivals. Dunn attended both the Canadian Film Centre as well as Ryerson University in Toronto.[3] One of his early short films, titled Life Doesn't Frighten Me, starred acclaimed Canadian actor Gordon Pinsent and won various awards, including the CBC Short Film Face-Off, with a cash prize of $30,000.[4] The film also won awards at the Toronto Student Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival in 2013.[5]

Dunn's debut feature film, Closet Monster, won the award for Best Canadian Feature Film at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival.[6] He was also named the inaugural winner of the Len Blum Residency, a Toronto International Film Festival program for emerging directors.[3]

Prior to Closet Monster, he made a number of short films, including Lionel Lonely Heart, Words! Words! Words!, Swallowed, Life Doesn't Frighten Me and Pop-Up Porno.[7]

Personal life

Dunn is openly gay.[8]
