Vasconcelos (also Vasconcellos) is a surname of Portuguese origin. It is classified as a toponym, that is, of geographical origin. It derives from a place in the Braga District.

History

The Vasconcelos' descended from Pedro Martins da Torre, son of Martim Moniz. His manor was called Torre de Vasconcelos, in the village of Amares (Entre Douro e Minho). The first family member so called was D. João Pires de Vasconcelos, who was in the conquest of Seville, with King Ferdinand III in 1248.

One of the most illustrious lineages in Portugal, descending from the kings of Leon through D. Fruela, who held the kingdoms of Leon and Asturias and was married to D. Nunila Ximenes, his cousin island of D. Sancho Garcês, King of Navarre, and his wife D. Toda of Aragon, from whom was born the infant D. Ordonho the Blind, so called because his cousin King D. Ramiro II had his eyes removed, in order to succeed him in the kingdom, who married the infanta D. Cristina daughter of the King of Leon D. Bermudo II. His son was Count D. Ordonho Ordonhes, Count of Cabreira and Lord of Lemos and Sarria, married to D. Grácia, daughter of D. Garcia Fernandes, Count of Maranhão and Aza and of the House of Zara and his wife niece of the Holy Count D. Osório. This marriage was born Count D. Garcia Ordonhes, Lord of Aza, who received with Infanta D. Urraca daughter of the King of Navarre, D. Garcia Sanches and his wife, D Estevaninha de Barcelona who had D. Osorio Garcia Count of Cabreira and Ribeira, who married D. Sancha Moniz daughter of D. Moninho Fernandes, Lord of the city of Toro, son of King Fernando the Great, of Leon and Castile, called the peer of the Emperor. This D. Osorio Garcia who was meirinho-mor of Galicia, by the years 822, came to settle Portugal reigning D. Ramiro de Leon and won the battle of Clavijo.

In Northeast Brazil, more precisely in the region of Alagoas and Pernambuco, a family introduced the marks of the tower of Vasconcelos in their coat of arms and included the swords of the Templars, in honor of these brave Christian warriors, whose order was extinguished in 1213 with the death of Jacques de Molay in Paris.

People coming from the Vasconcelos region who settled in other places ended up being recognized as "de Vasconcelos". With time, the "de" ceased to exist and only the surname remained to be disseminated among the descendants.
