The Vigário Geral massacre (Portuguese: chacina de Vigário Geral [ʃɐˈsĩnɐ dʒi viˈɡaɾju ʒeˈɾaw]) occurred on August 29, 1993 at the Vigário Geral favela in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is still in trial as of 2012. Supposedly, a death squad composed by policeman retaliated the killings of 4 officers by drug traffickers at the favela. The attack resulted in 21 innocent people dead, including a 15-year-old girl.

In a similar incident in April 2005, rogue policemen killed about 30 people in a suburb in Rio de Janeiro, after eight police officers had been arrested in connection with a double murder.[1]
