WZGN (102.3 FM) is a Classic Hits formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Crozet, Virginia, serving Charlottesville and Albemarle County, Virginia. WZGN is owned and operated by Monticello Media.[3]
History
The station was originally put on the air in September 1980 by the owner of WPED-AM, McClanahan Broadcasting. It simulcast that station's programming, which was a country format originating from studios at the end of Hilltop Street in Crozet. The stations were known as the "Country Twins" at the time. Both stations were purchased in 1983 by Elting Enterprises of New York; the format did not change.
Sale
On July 10, 2007, VARTV.com reported that Kalil and Company Inc announced that it brokered a deal for Clear Channel to sell its entire Charlottesville cluster to George Reed's Sistema 102 LLC for $7.75 Million. Sistema 102 LLC changed its name to Monticello Media on September 1, 2007.
Format Flip
WZGN, then known as WSUH, changed to a less rigid "era based" oldies and classic rock under the name "Generations 102.3 & 94.1" to go along with their slogan, "Music for Your Generation".
On November 26, 2007, WSUH changed its call sign to WZGN to reflect its new format and branding.
Translator Shift
On September 7, 2008, WZGN's Downtown Charlottesville translator, W231AD, shifted from simulcasting WZGN to simulcasting sister news-talker WCHV. On January 14, 2011, W231AD shifted back to simulcasting WZGN.
