The 1996–97 NBA season was the Dallas Mavericks' 17th season in the NBA. With new head coach Jim Cleamons, the Mavericks struggles continued. With the team not showing any improvement, they traded Jason Kidd to the Phoenix Suns for Michael Finley, Sam Cassell and A.C. Green. They later on sent Jim Jackson to the New Jersey Nets for Shawn Bradley, and Jamal Mashburn to the Miami Heat for Sasha Danilovic. The Mavericks finished the season with a 24-58 record, fourth in the Midwest Division. Power forward Chris Gatling was selected for the 1997 NBA All-Star Game before being traded to the Nets midway through the season.
