The 1996–97 Seattle SuperSonics season was the 29th season of the Seattle SuperSonics in the National Basketball Association (NBA).[1] After finishing the regular season with a 57–25 record, the Sonics entered the playoffs as the number two seed in the Western Conference. Three members of the team, Gary Payton, Shawn Kemp and Detlef Schrempf were all selected for the 1997 NBA All-Star Game. In the playoffs, they defeated the Phoenix Suns in the first round and lost to the Houston Rockets in seven games in the Conference Semifinals. It was also Kemp's last season with the SuperSonics, as he was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers the following year.
