The 6 arrondissements of the Gironde department are:

  1. Arrondissement of Blaye, (subprefecture: Blaye) with 65 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 52,138 in 1990, and was 54,136 in 1999, an increase of 3.83%.
  2. Arrondissement of Bordeaux, (prefecture of the Gironde department: Bordeaux) with 82 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 912,990 in 1990, and was 979,262 in 1999, an increase of 7.26%.
  3. Arrondissement of Langon, (subprefecture: Langon) with 198 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 77,408 in 1990, and was 79,439 in 1999, an increase of 2.62%.
  4. Arrondissement of Lesparre-Médoc, (subprefecture: Lesparre-Médoc) with 51 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 42,492 in 1990, and was 42,854 in 1999, an increase of 0.85%.
  5. Arrondissement of Libourne, (subprefecture: Libourne) with 129 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 128,471 in 1990, and was 131,643 in 1999, an increase of 2.47%.
  6. Arrondissement of Arcachon, (subprefecture: Arcachon) with 17 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 110,269 in 1999 and included in the census figures for Bordeaux. It was split from the arrondissement of Bordeaux on January 1, 2007.
