St. George's Church is a Ukrainian Catholic church located in the East Village, Manhattan of New York City on E. 7th Street at the southeast corner of Hall Place.[3]
Buildings
The previous church was located at East 7th Street, between Hall Place and Second Avenue. The former St. George's Ukrainian Catholic Church was originally built in the 1840s by the Methodist Episcopal Church and was adapted to the Ukrainian Byzantine rite in 1911.[4] later termed the Old Building by the new Ukrainian Catholic owners. The AIA Guide to NYC (Revised Edition 1978) described it as “A Greek Revival temple in stucco, with a mini-onion dome.” The AIA regretted the “domed symbol of the parish’s wealth and burgeoning membership: Miami Beach on 7th Street replaces the real Greek Revival thing.”[2] The AIA Guide to NYC (Fifth Edition, 2010) clarified that that church was built in 1840 and demolished in 1976 "to provide off-street parking for the congregation's new building next door."[1]
The present church building was built in 1977 to designs by architect Apollinaire Osadca. It replaced an earlier church.[2][5]
