The first season of The Amazing Race Philippines features eleven teams of two, each with a pre-existing relationship, in a race around the Philippines. The show is hosted by Derek Ramsay.

The show premiered on October 29, 2012. It aired every Mondays to Fridays at 9:00 PM (PST) and Saturdays at 8:30 PM (PST) on TV5; Also, a special marathon episode of every 6 weekly episodes aired on Sundays at 9:30 PM (PST). The winner of the race wins ₱2 million.

Celebrity best friends LJ Moreno & CJ Jaravata were the winners of the first season of The Amazing Race Philippines.

Production

Development and filming

The starting line of the first season of The Amazing Race Philippines took place in the former municipal cemetery of old Manila, Paco Park.

It was in late 2011 when TV5 had announced that it has acquired the rights to air a local version of the reality show in the Philippines. Filming took place in June of the following year. TV5 had commissioned the Australian production company, activeTV to produce the show.

To promote the show, a mini race for the press was held on October 18, 2012 in Eastwood City. Press members were paired with a team from the race and completed different tasks together. Teams had also appeared on various TV5 shows. Teams were interviewed on talk shows like Ang Latest and Good Morning Club, appeared on game shows like Million Peso Money Drop, Wiltime Bigtime among others.

The show also featured theater actor and director Audie Gemora as a judge in the Bingo task of Leg 1, and game show host Arnell Ignacio in the same Leg, as the quizmaster of the Ikot detour choice.

Casting

Auditions were held from March 5, 2012 to April 27, 2012 (extended from April 2, 2012). Applicants must be at least 21 years old, a Filipino citizen or a permanent resident of the Philippines. Auditions were done via three methods: online, mail-in, and on-ground at TV5 Broadway Studio in Quezon City and at other various locations.

In October 19, 2012, the contestants were revealed. The cast includes celebrity best friends CJ Jaravata and LJ Moreno, beauty queen Danielle "Dani" Castaño and football player brothers Armand and Anton del Rosario. Jervi Li of Team Amigas (with Saida Diola) was the first transgender contestant to compete on any series of The Amazing Race.

After the show, teams appeared on some of the network's TV shows. Pamela & Vanessa later appeared on their own reality show titled after their moniker on the race, The Alabang Housewives. Dani & Mish also guested on some episodes of Pinoy Explorer.

Broadcasting

Unlike its international counterparts, the show is broadcast as a weekday program airing 30 minutes per episode in 6 times a week, Monday through Saturday, compared to other versions of the show which airs 1 to 2 episodes per week. Also, a special marathon episode of the daily episodes per week airs on Sundays.

On December 10, 2012, the show was preempted in order to give way for TV5's telethon to support the victims of typhoon Bopha (local name: Pablo).

• A red team placement means the team was eliminated.
• A green ƒ indicates that the team won a Fast Forward.
• A purple ε indicates that the team decided to use the Express Pass on that Leg.
• A fuchsia § means the team used the Salvage Pass on that Leg to bypass a time limit instead of using it to save the last place team from elimination.
• A blue team's placement indicates that the team came in last on a non-elimination Leg.

5. ^ Fausto & Dayal initially arrived 6th, but did not perform an additional task at the Maligcong Rice Terraces. They were instructed to perform the additional task before they could be checked in. During this time, two teams checked in at the Pit Stop, dropping them to 8th.
6. ^ Pamela & Vanessa were incorrect on their final task before the Pit Stop. Since they were last, they were allowed to check-in and were eliminated.

18. ^ Marc & Kat initially arrived 2nd but were issued a 40-minute penalty for untying the ropes used at the Lulubog side of the Detour. LJ and CJ checked in during that time, dropping them to 3rd place.
19. ^ Sheena & Gee initially arrived 3rd but were issued a 30-minute penalty for being "Marked for Elimination". LJ and CJ checked in during this time, dropping them to 4th place, and thus were eliminated.
20. ^ At the Smart Puerto Princesa challenge, Fausto and Dayal were issued a 15-minute penalty for using one of the illegal words in the description.

Voting history

In addition to the original Yield format used on the fourth Leg and ninth Leg, where only a single team can Yield another team of their choosing, all teams on the fifth and sixth Legs voted for who should receive the Yield and U-Turn. This format is similar to the format introduced on the second season of Israel's version of the race, HaMerotz LaMillion. Teams would encounter, at the beginning of the leg, a board where they had to cast their vote for the team they wanted to either Yield (leg 5) or U-Turn (leg 6). The team with the most Yield votes must stop racing for a predetermined amount of time later in the race before continuing; while the team who has the most U-Turn votes must complete both tasks of the Detour.

Prizes

The prize for each Leg is awarded to the first place team for that Leg. The cash prizes for Legs 1 to 10 are sponsored by American Tourister, the cash prize in Leg 11 was sponsored by Smart Communications, and the prize for Leg 12 was a one-year supply of fuel with Techron and was sponsored by Caltex; while the grand prize for the race was sponsored by Brother Industries Philippines. The prize on each leg before the final leg was ₱200,000, with the grand prize on the final leg being ₱2,000,000. Additional prizes were awarded as follows:

• The winners of Leg 1 won the Salvage Pass, enabling them to either save the last place team from elimination or receive a 30-minute headstart at any point where they are faced with a time restriction.
• The winners of Leg 3 won the Express Pass, allowing them at a later point during the race to bypass any task and automatically receive their next clue.
• In Leg 11, the team that finished the printer task at Marajo Tower the fastest were awarded ₱100,000 worth of printers and printing supplies courtesy of Brother Industries Philippines; it was coincidental that the winners of the regular ₱200,000 prize also won the bonus prize.

Leg 1 (Metro Manila)

The first Pit Stop of The Amazing Race Philippines took place at University of Santo Tomas in Manila.

In the first Roadblock of the race, one team member had to throw five basketballs from the 15 feet (4.6 m) free throw line into a hoop in order to receive their next clue. This Leg's Detour was a choice between Pindot (Press) or Ikot (Spin). In Pindot, teams needed to find and take a picture of a route marker flag (located in another ride called the Wild River) using a camera while riding an inverted roller coaster called the Star Flyer; in Ikot, teams needed to solve three mathematical questions while riding a pendulum ride called the Star Frisbee. If they had successfully answered all three questions, the quizmaster would give them their next clue. If teams failed to answer one question correctly, they would have to repeat the ride again.

Additional tasks

• At the start of the race, teams had to go up the burial walls in order to get their first clue on top of their backpacks.
• At the Manila Yacht Club, teams had to decode nautical flags with decoders scattered around the area. The phrase needed to get their next clue was "Blue Skies and Calm Waters".
• At Midas Hotel and Casino, teams had to change into formal wear and enter the casino to play a special game of Baccarat. The chips they would earn had letters on them that they needed in order to spell out their next destination (Astrodome).
• At Plaza Miranda, teams had to convince twelve people to sing the song Bingo with them and a Rondalla band to a judge's satisfaction in order to receive their next clue.

Leg 2 (Metro Manila → Ilocos Sur)

The Historic Town of Vigan, was visited in the second Leg of the race. Pictured above is Calle Crisologo where teams had to transport 60 burnay jars to a marked store.

This Leg's Detour was a choice between Gawa (Work) and Nguya (Chew). In Gawa, teams had to make two dozen Vigan longanizas to the standards of the assigned longaniza vendor in order to receive their next clue. In Nguya, teams had to eat a plate of 70 longanizas in order to receive their next clue. In this Leg's Roadblock, one team member had to ride a kayak and paddle through the river to reach his partner rappelling down the bridge. Once the team was reunited, the paddler must then reach the river banks to receive their next clue.

Additional tasks

• At Pagburnayan District, Intersected teams had to carry and transport 60 burnay jars to a marked shop at Calle Crisologo using a horse driven bamboo cart called a kariton. If the intersected teams broke more than 5 jars, the teams would be given a one-minute time penalty per broken jar.
• At Plaza Burgos, teams had to participate in a traditional Pukpok Palayok game. One team member would be blindfolded and had to smash the clay pot where their next clue was contained. The other member had to use a tambourine to help guide their blindfolded partner to the pot.

Leg 3 (Ilocos Sur → Mountain Province)

The third Leg of the race took place in the town of Bontoc, Mountain Province and its surrounding rice terraces.

Air dates: November 7 – 9, 2012

In this Leg's Detour, teams had to choose between Magkarga (Carry) or Magsaka (Plow). In Magkarga, teams had to gather 20 chickens at Kimakims Chicken Farm and transport these chickens to the Bontoc Public Market. In, Magsaka, teams had to plow a rice field, with the aid of a water buffalo, to find their next clue within the mud. In this Leg's Roadblock, one team member had to dance a traditional Bontoc dance with a jar placed atop their head. For 90 seconds, the jar must not fall or be touched while dancing. If the jar fell, the team member would have to wait for their turn again.

Additional tasks

• At the start of the Leg, teams had to ride a marked vehicle to reach Bontoc, Mountain Province.
• After crossing Kadchog Hanging Bridge, teams must look for the right clue from a number of clue boxes placed among sections of the Kadchog Rice Terraces.
• Teams had to ride a marked jeepney to reach the Pit Stop.
• At Maligcong Rice Terraces, each team member had to pack and sack 20 kilograms (44 lb) of rice and carry it to the Pit Stop.

Leg 4 (Mountain Province → Benguet)

One of the Detour choices in Baguio was selling 10 pieces of a popular local craft, homemade softbrooms.

In this Leg's Roadblock, the chosen team member needed to go into a mine and search for a key in the holes of the mine shaft to open a chest with a gold bullion. The gold bullion needed to be brought outside the mine and be given to a gold miner in order to receive their next clue. In this Leg's Detour, teams must choose between Sell 10 or Buy 10. In Sell 10, teams needed to sell 10 broomsticks for 60 pesos each in order to receive their next clue; while in Buy 10, teams must buy 10 listed items in a photo album within the allocated budget.

Additional tasks

• At BM Parungao Shoe Store, teams needed to pair 10 shoes scattered over the shoe shop.
• Teams needed to travel to the Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto by riding a jeepney.
• Teams had to count the number of steps (215) going to the Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto in order to be checked-in at the Pit Stop.

Leg 5 (Benguet → Zambales)

In this Leg's Roadblock, one team member had to solve a puzzle, by arranging six Philippine Presidents in order (Presidents Ferdinand Marcos to Benigno Aquino III), found in a computer tablet within a 15-second time limit while his partner is hanging on a harness 100 feet (30 m) above the ground. If the puzzle was correctly answered, the one hanging will be slowly lowered to the ground. If they fail to solve the puzzle, the one hanging will free fall and they would have to repeat the task.

Additional tasks

• At the start of the Leg, teams had to cast their vote for the team they wish to Yield before driving a car to Subic Freeport.
• At Zoobic Safari, teams had to feed tigers in order to receive their next clue.
• At the Global Ship Terminal, teams had to break a solid concrete tube using the provided tools in order to retrieve their next clue which was encased inside of the tube.

Additional note

• This Leg and Leg 6 form a "Super Leg". Teams were given their first clue for Leg 6 at the El Kabayo Riding Stables Pit Stop and had no mandatory rest period.

Leg 6 (Zambales → Pampanga & Tarlac)

In this Leg's Roadblock, teams need to ride an ultralight aircraft, similar to the photo above, and hit a target on the ground while flying using a flour bomb.

Air dates: November 17 & 19, 2012

• Capas, Tarlac (Mt. Pinatubo – Sitio Tarukan)

In this Leg's Roadblock, one team member had to ride an ultralight aircraft and hit a big target on the ground using a flour bomb. Teams had to get a total of at least 5 points in order to receive their next clue. In this Leg's Detour, teams had to choose between Tamaan (Hit) or Iwasan (Evade). In Tamaan, teams had to hit a certain point of the target by using a pistol and a rifle. When they hit the right spot, they would receive their next clue. In Iwasan, teams had to go through an obstacle course while evading paintball shooters to retrieve their next clue in the bags hung at the other end of the course.

Additional tasks

• Upon arriving at Air Force City Park, teams needed to look for a jet trainer aircraft, a T33 Thunderbird, placed as a landmark within the park. Within the vicinity of that landmark is a board where they had to cast their vote for the team they want to U-Turn.
• At SM City Clark, teams had to park their car at a marked rectangle and seek the help of ten people to lift their car to another rectangular marking. After transferring the car, the team and the ten people must stack themselves into the car for 30 seconds.
• Upon arriving at the foot of Mt. Pinatubo, teams needed to drive a 4x4 jeep to Sitio Tarukan.

Leg 7 (Pampanga → Albay)

In this leg of the race, teams visited the remains of Cagsawa Church, a church destroyed by the Mayon Volcano.

Air dates: November 20 – 22, 2012

In this leg's Detour, teams had to choose between Jig or Pig. In Jig, teams would have to don costumes and perform a traditional Ibalong dance to the satisfaction of two judges. In Pig, teams would have to cover each other in mud and powder and enter a muddy pen to catch four pigs. Once each team member caught two pigs and put them in another pen, a farmer would give them their next clue. In this leg's Roadblock, teams have to pick one luggage among those that they had brought with them at the start of the Leg. They would then ride an all-terrain vehicle to deliver that one luggage to a local chieftain who would open it for them. If they pick the luggage without the clue, they would have to go back to their partners and choose another luggage until they find the one with their next clue.

Additional tasks

• Teams had to ride a marked jeepney in order to travel to all the race locations of this leg.
• From the start of the leg at the Holiday Inn Clark, teams had to carry eight luggages all the way to the Pit Stop.
• At Red Labuyo Restaurant, teams had to eat a bowl of Bicol Express and a bowl of strawberry ice cream to receive their next clue.
• At the World War II Japanese Tunnel, teams had to find their next clue which was hidden inside a box.

Leg 8 (Albay)

The Detour in Albay had teams choosing between Crab and Coconut. In Crab, teams had to find a basket filled with crabs and deliver it to a fisherman; while in Coconut, teams need to scrape out coconut meat and produce coconut milk.

In this leg's Detour, teams had to choose between Crab or Coconut. In Crab, teams had to find a basket filled with crabs in a muddy swamp and deliver it to a nearby fisherman, who would give them their next clue. In Coconut, teams had to scrape out meat from 2 and a half coconuts manually. Then, teams had to produce coconut milk from the meat and fill a container by half (350 ml). When they have filled the container, they would receive their next clue. In this leg's Roadblock, teams needed to go to the lobby of the Misibis Bay Resort and Casino and get four cocktail drinks. Using one hand, the team member had to carry these drinks on a tray while searching for the correct room (while using an electronic key to open the doors) containing their next clue, If they drop the drinks, they would have to go back to the lobby and get a new set.

Additional tasks

• Teams had to ride a marked jeepney in order to travel to all race locations of this leg.
• At Legazpi Public Market, teams needed to eat bowls of Halo-halo in order to reveal a sticker at the bottom of the bowl which would point them to Yanzon Store where they would have to exchange their empty bowls for their next clue.
• Upon arriving at Luyang Beach in Misibis Bay Resort and Casino, teams had to build a raft from the provided materials and paddle themselves to Mosboron Beach, the Pit Stop for the eighth leg of the race.

Leg 9 (Albay → Cebu)

Upon arriving in Cebu, teams visited the Lapu-Lapu shrine to get their next clue from a man dressed as Lapu-Lapu.

In this Leg's Detour, teams had to choose between Saang (Shellfish) or Uling (Charcoal). In Saang, teams had to open and skewer shellfishes. And using a Kariton, they must sell 35 shellfishes for not less than 15 pesos per stick, for a total of 525 pesos. In Uling, teams had to find a marked stall outside the Tabo-an Market and repack 2 sacks of charcoal into 50 plastic bags according to the criteria of a judge, after which teams will be given their next clue. In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to rock climb, and then, climb a ladder to the top most portion of the tower to retrieve their next clue.

Additional tasks

• At Vanafi, teams must arrange jewelries from the least expensive to the most expensive.
• At Coco Hair Studio in Parkmall, intersected teams had to convince two people to allow them to wash, blow dry and style their hair. If a hairstylist is satisfied with their work, they could receive their next clue. After this task, teams were no longer intersected.

Additional note

• While performing the Roadblock, the team member climbing encountered an "Anonymous Yield" halfway up the tower, the one performing the Roadblock had to decide which team they wanted to yield before continuing the Roadblock.

Leg 10 (Cebu → Aklan)

The island of Boracay in Malay, was the location of the tenth leg of the race.

In the only Fast Forward of the race, a team had to proceed to R.P. Barber where both team members had to have their heads shaven. Once done, they would then receive a clue that would point them to the location of the Pit Stop. In this Leg's Detour teams had to choose between Lulubog (To Sink) and Lilitaw (To Float). In Lulubog, teams had to dive using marine walk helmets and remove two tubes in a rope path without untying them from a board maze. In Lilitaw, teams had to ride a double outrigger canoe sail boat called Paraw and one team member must sail the boat to 3 orange buoys where in each buoy, the other team member had to get one coconut. In this leg's Roadblock, one team member should dig at a marked area at the shore of the Puka Shell Beach and should dig deep enough to reveal their buried clue.

Additional tasks

• At Sprite Beach Party, teams had to find a man carrying a bottle case of Sprite. They will receive their clue if they can find the logo of The Amazing Race Philippines under the cap. If they failed to do it, they should drink the contents of the bottle and try again. They are not obliged, however, to drink the contents of the bottle containing the logo.

• Two episodes aired back-to-back on December 1, making this leg have 3 episodes.

Leg 11 (Aklan → Metro Manila → Palawan)

In this leg, the teams visited Puerto Princesa Subterranean River in Palawan where they had to search the cave walls for a date.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member must ride an 800-metre (0.50 mi) long zip line and will need to memorize the pattern of 4 sets of different colors (Red, Blue, Yellow; Green, Red, Yellow; Yellow, Blue, Red; Blue, Yellow, Green) located in 4 boats. Once ashore, that team member must reconstruct it using colored rectangular boards in order to receive their next clue. In this Leg's Detour, teams had to choose between Swing and Stroke. In Swing, teams must proceed to an elementary school and find a marching band. They would then follow and learn a 5 step baton swirling routine in order to receive their next clue. The first team to finish this task will donate ₱100,000 worth of printers to the school courtesy of Brother Industries Philippines. In Stroke, teams must proceed to a nearby shore and find a boat they would work on. Teams must refurbish the boat by painting and fixing dents on it to receive their next clue.

Additional tasks

• At the showroom of Brother Industries in Marajo Tower, teams had to figure out which year women were allowed to vote in the Philippines and enter the year (1937) onto a printer. If they were correct, the printer would print out "Correct" and The Amazing Race Philippines logo on the back which they would use to exchange for their next clue.
• At Sabang Beach, teams needed to assemble the tents they would be sleeping in for the night. If a ranger is satisfied with what they have assembled, they would get their next clue and a corresponding time (based on military time) of their departure the next day.
• At the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River, teams had to enter the river and search for the date of the first visit of Lt. H.G. Warwick to the Subterranean River (March 18, 1937). When they see it, teams must take a picture of it and present it to a boat master in exchange for their next clue.
• At the Elephant Cave, teams must first break open several coconuts using the tool provided in order to find one that had a red-colored flesh in exchange for their next clue.

Leg 12 (Palawan)

In one of the two Detour choices of this leg, teams had to find marked stalls in a public market and had to get 3 group of items (blocks of ice, a tray of eggs, and eels that are similar to the photo above) that they had to deliver to a local restaurant.

In this Leg's Detour, teams had to choose between Count and Carry. In Count, teams had to find marked fish stalls and count the number of fishes inside a container given to them, amidst the noisiness of the market vendors and their surroundings. When they get the correct number (926), the fish vendor will hand them their next clue. In Carry, teams had to find marked stalls where they will get 3 eels, a tray of eggs, and 2 blocks of ice which they needed to deliver to JA Seafoods Restaurant. When they had delivered the items in good condition, the restaurant owner would give them their next clue. In this Leg's Roadblock, one team member have to look among hundreds of bottles scattered around the shore for the bottle containing the message with their next destination written on it.

Additional tasks

• At Malvar Street, teams needed to figure out that their next clue was inside a tricycle roving the street with the words "CLUE BOX" painted on the front.
• At Honda Bay, teams had to ride a marked boat to reach each of the island destinations.
• At Pandan Island, one team member had to correctly match the five answers of his teammate from the five questions asked to them. The questions were related to the 11 teams of the race. The teams were asked the following questions: which team can help them; which team can lie to them; which team has good teamwork; which team they do not want; and which team has bad luck on their side.

Leg 13 (Palawan → Davao del Sur → Davao del Norte)

In the last leg of the race, teams visited the People's Park in Davao City where they needed to find their next clue which was transcribed onto a book held by a woman statue.

In the first Roadblock, a team member must arrange chronologically 12 numbered flags, which represents the 12 legs of the race, by placing them beside each of the 12 wood statues that have engravings of the regions of the Philippines. In the second Roadblock of the last leg of the race, a team member had to ride a motorcycle and finish 20 laps in a motorcross course in order to receive their clue.

Additional tasks

• At Smart Puerto Princesa, a team member had to call his other teammate at Sheena Travel Asia, while using the smartphones provided by Smart, to describe their next destination (Davao) from the image displayed on a computer tablet without using the words given to them.
• At People's Park, teams had to find their next clue which was transcribed on the book held by a statue of a woman.
• At Davao Crocodile Park, a team had to walk on a tightrope together across a crocodile pen.
• At Ana Marina Resort, teams had to ride a jetski and search the sea for their next clue below the 97th buoy.
• At Santa Isla, teams had to unearth the correct treasure chest buried in the shore for their next clue.

Additional note

• During the rest period before starting the last leg of the race, teams had to record a video message for their loved ones back home.
• Two episodes aired back-to-back on December 14 and 15, making this leg have 4 episodes.
• At the time of the first Roadblock (the 13th Roadblock of the race), a team member that had performed a total of 7 Roadblocks is prohibited to do the task and needs to sit out, thereby letting his other team member perform the said task. In the second Roadblock and the last one in the race, the Roadblock cap had been reset to zero, thus letting any team member perform the task.
• Teams were prohibited to travel from Sta. Ana Wharf en route to Samal Island.

Television ratings for the first season of The Amazing Race Philippines on TV5 are based from two firms, AGB Nielsen and Kantar Media - TNS. AGB Nielsen mostly covers Mega Manila, while Kantar Media - TNS covers mostly the Philippines.
