Santuri (community development block) (Bengali: সান্তুরি সমষ্টি উন্নয়ন ব্লক) is an administrative division in Raghunathpur subdivision of Purulia district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Santuri police station serves this block. Headquarters of this block is at Murardi.[1][2]
History
Jaina Bhagavati-Sutra of 5th century AD mentions that Purulia was one of the sixteen mahajanapadas and was a part of the kingdom known as Vajra-bhumi in ancient times. In 1833, Manbhum district was carved out of Jungle Mahals district, with headquarters at Manbazar. In 1838, the headquarters was transferred to Purulia. In 1956, Manbhum district was partitioned between Bihar and West Bengal under the States Reorganization Act and the Bihar and West Bengal (Transfer of Territories) Act 1956.[3]

Santuri community development block has an area of 181.03 km2.[2]
The area forms the lowest step of the Chota Nagpur Plateau. The general scenario is undulating land with scattered hills.[4]

Gram panchayats of Santuri block/panchayat samiti are: Balitora, Gariska, Muradih, Ramchandrapur-Kotaldih, Santuri and Tarbari.[5]
Demographics
As per 2001 census, Santuri block had a total population of 69,546, out of which 35,839 were males and 33,707 were females. Santuri block registered a population growth of 9.36 per cent during the 1991-2001 decade. Decadal growth for Purulia district was 13.96 per cent.[2]Decadal growth in West Bengal was 17.84 per cent.[6] Scheduled castes at 16,976 formed around one-fourth the population. Scheduled tribes numbered 22,725, forming around one-fourth the population.[7]
Literacy
As per 2001 census, Santuri block had a total literacy of 56.50 per cent for the 6+ age group. While male literacy was 72.02 per cent female literacy was 39.98 per cent. Purulia district had a total literacy of 55.57 per cent, male literacy being 73.72 per cent and female literacy being 36.50 per cent.[8]
